Task 2: Document a Process

Task 2 is document a process which will include the people, processes, and technologies, or PPTs, necessary to complete this process. For this I decided to use a typical process I do periodically as part of my job role. Writing technical procedures for myself and my department has been something I have done since I started in my first help desk role where I realized the majority of knowledge wasn't documented, but was in fact, tribal. That is to say, this person knew how to do something, and maybe another, but if you wanted to learn how to do you, you had to interrupt their work and ask for guidance and they were also less than thrilled about that. Why they just didn't write up their procedures so they wouldn't be pestered, I'll never know.

The task I'm documented is a broad process for verifying the functionality of VPN hardware devices.

Aruba VPN testing

  1. Plug device into outside ethernet (ethernet not on NAC)
  2. Plug in VPN power cable
  3. Plug in thin client power cable
  4. Wait for connection and traffic lights to light up on VPN
  5. Power on thin client
  6. Verify login on thin client is successful
If unit is functioning:
  1. Place VPN in bubble wrap, then in correctly-sized box
  2. Write VPN asset number on outside of the box
  3. Include VPN power cord and 5 foot long ethernet cable inside of box
  4. Seal box with packing tape
  5. Move box to storage shelf
If unit is not functioning:
  1. Write reason on post-it note, such as, "No power, No connection"
  2. Place post-it note on VPN
  3. Place faulty VPN in specified area for repair
